AS
FAR AWAY is a gay road trip comedy that’s hilarious, smart and
romantic. With proper marketing and brave financing behind
it, it is destined to be the breakout successful gay film that has
been eluding that audience for too long a time.
Jaime is a nice early thirties gay man who has just been horribly
cheated on by his long time boyfriend. Finding himself in a
desperate search for love, he quickly hits the bars, the personals
and (God help him) even the Internet in his rush to get into
another relationship as fast as possible before the hurt sets in.
Nathan is in a different situation altogether. In a long
term committed relationship with the stable Cam, Nathan is
terrified of the next step that Cam has been pushing to get to:
marriage. The problem for Nathan is he just doesn’t like
himself. Something happened in Nathan’s childhood that he
refuses to speak about or confront. And until he does,
Nathan will continue to not only be blocked in his relationship,
but blocked in all aspects of his life as well.
After
Jaime decides a change of scenery is what’s required, he
convinces Nathan to go see his Dad. So they and their very
young and carefree buddy Jared hit the road. What starts out
as a fun road trip turns into a life lesson for all involved.
Jaime will learn how it’s important to slow down in life, Nathan
will be forced to confront his past and Jared will realize that
his carefree innocence doesn’t translate outside of the safe
cocoon of West Hollywood.
This is a hilarious script that doesn’t stray too far from the
proven road trip formula. Although it is loaded with very
funny pop culture references and witty exchanges, it also has
something to say. It makes insightful commentary about
beauty and shallowness, younger gays versus older gays, prejudice
and tolerance.
